Self Help Graphics: 11/2/08: A Call to Witness

October 27th, 2008

A Family of Artist’s at Work: Artist Guadalupe Rodriguez is reflected in a cross that is part of their altar at Self Help Graphics. Guadalupe, Rebeka and Sandy Rodriguez created original paintings, photographs and sculptural elements for their altar honoring Communities in Resistance.  The clay skeletons and bees represent demonstrators from the Tlatelolco massacre of ’68 and Acteal in ‘97.

A call to witness: All is not forgotten

Calaveras, Abejas and Mariposas: Communities in Resistance
Rodriguez Family: Guadalupe, Rebeka and Sandy Rodriguez

Self Help Graphics has been at the forefront of cultural based community activism for over 30 years. Our Ofrenda reflects on the legacy of Self Help Graphics rooted in its origins of social justice2008 marks the 40th anniversary of Tlatelolco massacre at the Plaza De Las Tres Cultura at Tlaltelolco, Mexico City where demonstrators were killed when military and paramilitary troops opened fire. Ten days before the 1968 Olympic games students from the Universidad Autonoma were protesting  violations of human rights and demanding that the government bring to justice those responsible for the bloodshed that had taken place during the previous months.

Our Ofrenda acts as witness to this massacre. Our Ofrenda also honors the peaceful prayer group of 45 members of Las Abejas in the small village of Acteal in the state of Chiapas who were massacred in 1997 for being supporters of the Zapatistas. This altar commemorates the spirit of resistance and their struggle for social justice.

We will incorporate painting, photography and sculptural elements as well as traditional elements including the use of a Celestial window that serves as the portal for the departed to travel from Mictlan, candles to light their way, zempazuchitl for the pungent aroma and bright color to guide them to the realm of the living.  We will include water to quench their thirst, salt because it is /el sabor de los sabores/ to give flavor to life and sugar because it gives sweetness to life. Included too are tlalchico made traditionally of grains, seeds and spices that connects us on the earth to the three levels, celestial and underword, as well as mirrors to remind us of our mortality.

History is made by those who write it, our Ofrenda is intended to act as witness to this history.
